How Engineering and Management Students Can Get Good Jobs With Handsome Packages

I hope you know that India produces around 15 lac engineers and about 5 lac MBAs every year. Around 60-70% of them are employable. Out of these only a few get good jobs, while others have to settle for whatever is offered to them. Don’t worry, I am not trying to scare you. I just want you to realize that getting a good job is not easy but is certainly possible with smart planning and preparation.

Let me share Shefali’s and Amit’s stories, two students with very different ways of studying and preparing for placements. Their stories will help you understand How Engineering and Management Students Can Get Good Jobs With Handsome packages. Ready to get started? Let's go!

Study Strategy:

Shefali knew the importance of having a structured study plan. She made a detailed schedule, dedicating two hours daily to core subjects and one hour to electives. This disciplined approach helped her manage her time well and avoid last-minute cramming. She stuck to her schedule, making sure she covered all subjects systematically. Her consistent study routine allowed her to stay on top of her coursework and do well in exams.

Amit, on the other hand, didn't have a structured plan. He studied irregularly, which led to stress and poor retention of information. During exam periods, he often felt overwhelmed, trying to cram large amounts of information in a short time. This unorganized approach negatively affected his performance and confidence.

  1. Setting Clear Goals

Shefali set SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) for her studies. For example, she aimed to complete three chapters of Mathematics in one week, breaking down the syllabus into manageable tasks. By setting clear goals, Shefali could track her progress and stay motivated. Achieving these smaller milestones boosted her confidence and kept her focused.

Amit, however, set vague and unrealistic goals, making it difficult for him to stay focused and motivated. He set goals like “study more,” which lacked specificity and were hard to measure. This led to a lack of direction and a sense of accomplishment.

2. Active Learning Techniques

Shefali used active learning strategies like summarizing, questioning, and teaching others. She explained complex concepts in simple terms to her friends, which reinforced her understanding and helped identify gaps in her knowledge. Studying together with friends made learning more engaging and effective.

Amit, on the other hand, preferred to study alone. He relied on passive learning, like reading and rereading textbooks, without actively engaging with the material. He struggled to retain information, which led to poor performance in exams and a lack of confidence in his knowledge.

3. Utilizing Technology and Resources

Shefali used online resources, educational apps, and virtual study groups. She used platforms like Coursera, Khan Academy, and Google Scholar to supplement her learning. This gave her a broader perspective on subjects, helping her stay ahead in her studies and gain extra skills.

Amit rarely used additional resources, relying only on classroom lectures and textbooks. He missed out on the wealth of information and diverse learning methods available online, which limited his understanding and skill set.

Placement Strategy:

  1. Researching Companies and Roles

Shefali started her placement preparation by researching companies and the roles they offered. She learned about their requirements, work culture, and the skills they valued. She tailored her resume and preparation to meet each company's specific needs, making her a strong candidate during placements.

Amit didn't have a systematic approach to researching companies. He often relied on hearsay and did last-minute preparations. His lack of preparation and understanding of company requirements put him at a disadvantage during interviews and placement drives.

2. Building a Strong Resume

Shefali created a well-structured resume that highlighted her skills, projects, internships, and extracurricular activities. She customized her resume for each job application. This detailed and tailored resume made a strong impression on recruiters, showcasing her qualifications and experiences effectively.

Amit’s resume was generic and poorly organized, failing to highlight his strengths and achievements. His resume did not stand out during placements, making it harder for him to secure interview opportunities.

3. Developing Soft Skills

Shefali focused on developing soft skills like communication, teamwork, and leadership. She took part in group discussions, presentations, and extracurricular activities to improve these skills. Her active participation in debate clubs and group discussions made her more confident during interviews.

Amit, on the other hand, neglected soft skills and focused only on technical knowledge. His lack of communication skills showed during interviews, affecting his performance, and reducing his chances of securing a job.

4. Preparing for Aptitude Tests

Shefali practiced regularly using online test series and previous placement papers, which improved her aptitude test scores. Her consistent practice helped her perform well in the initial rounds of the placement process, making her a strong contender for job opportunities.

Amit did not practice aptitude tests regularly, leading to lower scores and fewer chances of progressing in the placement process. His lack of practice and preparation made it hard for him to clear the initial screening rounds, limiting his opportunities for interviews.

5. Forging Connections with the right people

Shefali used social media to connect with alumni, recruiters, and industry experts who could help her find good job opportunities. By engaging with these connections, she stayed updated on the latest technological and business trends.

Amit, however, spent his time on social media posting and watching reels and stories, and forwarding messages and memes. This time did not add to his knowledge or skills, and it didn't help his career prospects.

I have no doubt that each one of you would want to follow in Shefali’s footsteps. Her balanced approach to academics and placement preparation enabled her to secure a job with a leading tech company, while Amit struggled to find opportunities due to his lack of planning and preparation.

Effective study techniques and thorough placement preparation are essential for engineering and management students aiming to secure high-paying jobs. By following strategies like Shefali's, you too can achieve your career goals.
